Remember that rumor that new MacBook Air and Mac Pro part numbers were popping up?
Yeah, scratch that. It seems that the boys over at 9to5Mac were a little confused. The site is now reporting — with great confidence, oddly — that Apple is prepping to launch Thunderbolt-equipped Mac minis and MacBooks with OS X Lion.
The site’s revised report claims the part numbers previously listed as Mac Pro models are actually as follows:
- MC914LL/A – J59, BEST – USA – White MacBook
- MC936LL/A – J40, ULTIMATE – USA – Mac mini Server
- MC815LL/A – J40I, BETTER – USA – Mac mini standard configuration
- MC816LL/A – J40, BEST – USA Faster Mac mini
While there is a whole conversation to be had about why rumors like this are super hard to believe anymore, there is something that rings a little more true about Apple not launching Mac Pros this week. For one, the dual-socket Xeons that Apple would be using aren’t quite done yet. Secondly, most Mac Pro buyers aren’t going to want — or be able — to run OS X Lion out of the box.
Both the Mac mini and MacBook are long overdue for an update, but many people — myself included — continue to wonder why Apple still sells the MacBook. My guess has been that Apple at some point will launch this machine as education-only, just like the eMac from years ago.
