Even though the PC market is slowing down, OS X keeps on building marketshare. The slowing PC market is likely caused by two factors: anticipation for Windows 8 or, most likely, the start of the “post-PC” revolution. Mikako Kitagawa, an analyst at Gartner, said the following about the decline of the market:
The third quarter has historically been driven by back-to-school sales, but U.S. PC shipments did not increase, not even sequentially, from the second quarter of 2012. Channels were conservative in placing orders. Professional PC shipments in the U.S. began slowing in the second quarter of this year, and they continued the trend in the third quarter.
So, why does this matter? Apple seems to be doing quite well when it comes to PC shipments — they’ve been shipping close to the same amount of Macs as last year while other major PC manufacturers have been shipping substantially less. Apple’s marketshare has continued to grow because consumers are purchasing less PCs. For instance, Toshiba has taken a huge 44 percent decline in shipments since this time last year. Ouch! If you’d like to view the full chart of shipments, we’ve embedded it above.
