Various tech sites are reporting a handful of users have been viewing their articles using the yet to be announced operating system OS X 10.9. Analytic stats have been showing that several users were using OS X 10.9 when they visited the site; however, the latest version of Apple’s OS is currently only at OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
A likely explanation for this is that Apple has already started to give out beta versions of the upcoming OS to select people and employees within the company. Another less-exciting option could be that it is simply someone tricking the sites into viewing their OS as 10.9.
If it is in fact the next version of Apple’s next operating system, it would be fair to expect a summer 2013 release for the new OS. Apple released its Lion OS in summer of 2011 and its Mountain Lion OS in summer of 2012. As you can see, Apple has moved to a yearly release schedule for its operating system updates. A 10.9 release in the next year is a pretty obvious move on Apple’s part. That would also mean that a lot of engineers and employees are already testing the device, which again, would make a lot of sense.
