Just last month Apple announced that the upcoming iOS 6 operating system won’t include a preinstalled YouTube app, which was included in all previous versions of iOS since the iPhone first launched in 2007. It was thought by a lot of people that this was yet another result of the ongoing Google/Apple/YouTube iPhone app battle, like Google’s map app being replaced as well.
As it turns out, YouTube has been upgrading its apps on every platform and releasing its own version that features the content that is available on the Web browser versions. And yes, this includes those pesky ads.
YouTube took to its blog today to describe what users can expect to see in the new app:
- Tens of thousands more videos, including official music videos
- New YouTube channel guide: Swipe your finger from the left edge of the screen to reveal a guide with your subscribed channels on YouTube
- Find awesome videos faster with new search tools that give suggestions while you type, and let your sort through videos or channels. Flip through related videos, comments, and more info, all while watching a video.
- More ways to share with the people you love on Google+, Facebook, text message in the app, Twitter and email
The YouTube app for iPhone and iPod is available for download today on the App Store, and an iPad version will be arriving in the coming months. Follow the link below to get the app for free.
