When Apple announced that the iPhone 4 would be heading to Verizon, many wondered whether sales would be strong, or if everyone that wanted an iPhone 4 already had one with AT&T. Well, as it turns out, there is still plenty more gravy left in the iPhone 4 gravy train. Proving that the market is not quite saturated yet, Verizon announced that it activated 2.2 million iPhone 4s in the first quarter, making it the most successful launch in the company’s history.
Rival AT&T reported on Wednesday that in the same quarter it had activated 3.6 million iPhones. Verizon, however, did not have the iPhone 4 available for a full quarter, as it released the CDMA version of the iPhone on February 10th. Results for the next quarter will give us a more fair comparison.
Are people switching to Verizon, or have they been holding out on getting the iPhone 4 until it was available on Verizon? It’s hard to know. Verizon also reported that it added 1.8 million new customers in Q1, which is pretty strong when compared to AT&T which announced on Wednesday that it had added just 62,000 new subscribers in the quarter.
With rumours swirling that the next iPhone won’t be revealed or released until the fall of 2011, Verizon customers will have a few more months at least to enjoy their new iPhone before iPhone 5 envy sets in.
