T-Mobile CEO John Legere revealed some interesting tidbits and stats about the company yesterday at the CES 2013, including that T-Mobile currently has 1.9 million iPhones on its network. Now he’s also revealed in an interview with Reuters that T-Mobile USA will begin to sell the iPhone in “three to four months.”
Legere wouldn’t reveal any great details about T-Mobile’s agreement with Apple, other than to say that T-Mobile USA is planning to sell the popular smartphone sooner rather than later, along with its plans to eliminate subsidies.
“They’re all, I would call them, in three to four months as opposed to six or nine months,” Legere said in an interview at the CES in Las Vegas.
Last year, T-Mobile announced its plans to eliminate handset subsidies in 2013 to give customers more flexibility and lower service prices. T-Mobile also promised that it would begin selling the iPhone, making it the last U.S. mobile provider to sell Apple’s handset.
T-Mobile hopes to entice customers away from bigger rivals like AT&T and Verizon Wireless by finally selling the iPhone alongside removing subsidies, which is a first for the U.S. wireless industry.
Legere said T-Mobile USA’s market share could possibly increase by 5 percent or higher from bigger rivals who still depend on subsidizing phones to give customers a device discount in exchange for tying them into a two-year contract.
