Earlier this year, Starbucks and Square announced a partnership where Starbucks would implement Pay With Square in their stores. Starbucks also gave Square a pretty $25 million in investments as well. Besides this, we haven’t heard much from Square or Starbucks as to when Pay With Square integration will actually be put into effect. Today, however, this all changes as Starbucks has announced that they will be supporting Pay With Square next month (November, 2012).
If you’re unaware, Pay With Square is an application developed by the folks at Square, a mobile payment startup. With Pay With Square, you can pay by just telling the cashier your name. How does this work? Well, when you initally set up Pay With Square, you’re asked to take a picture of your face. This picture pops up on the register when you walk into the store, based on your smartphone’s GPS location. And yes, Pay With Square is available for both iOS and Android.
So, what’s the downside to paying for your coffee via Pay With Square? You still have to tip your barista with cash. However, Starbucks said that you’ll be able to digitally tip sometime in 2013.
