While it’s no surprise that Verizon and Sprint can’t support simultaneous voice and data via 3G, some were hoping this would be fixed with the upcoming LTE-enabled iPhone 5. However, this doesn’t seem to be the case. When the Verge contacted Verizon about the issue, Verizon released this statement to them in response:
The iPhone 5 was designed to allow customers to place a voice call on the Verizon Wireless network, while letting customers access the Internet over the WiFi.
What makes this statement even more odd is the fact that the rest of Verizon’s LTE lineup supports simultaneous voice and data. This will definitely come as a surprise to those switching from LTE Android devices on Verizon’s network. Sprint users aren’t lucking out either. Since both Sprint and Verizon are sharing the same version of the iPhone 5, we can expect that Sprint users not to be able to make use of simultaneous data and talk either.
AT&T, on the other hand, has confirmed to the Verge that iPhone 5 users will indeed be able to use voice and data at the same time on their network. However, when users accept or send a call while on LTE, they will be pushed back to AT&T’s HSPA+ network for data consumption.
