When I first checked my Twitter feed this morning, this tweet is what I saw:
Skype 4.0 is out for iOS. Its second-best new feature (according to Skype’s own list) is “app auto restarts if unexpectedly shut down.”

It’s sad but true. The number two feature for version 4.0 of Skype for iOS is the ability to start over when the app crashes. Sigh. Much like the “Reset” button in the Netflix settings for iOS, if you need an “Unfuck this app” feature, perhaps there is something wrong. No?
If you’re interested in what else is new in the latest release of Skype, the answer is “Not much.” They’ve added the ability to move your video preview window elsewhere on the screen. That’s useful, I guess. Worthy of being the leading feature on a major new version? Hmm. Other release notes include the Apple-like cryptic phrases such as “Improved accessibility,” “Improved stability,” and “Bug fixes.” All in all, it doesn’t seem like much has changed. Did they do significant work under the hood? Who knows? They certainly aren’t doing a good job of explaining what they’ve done, and why it is substantial enough to bump the version number other than four being one larger than three.
Substantial or not, Skype users should update to the latest version as soon as possible if only so you can tell the Skype tech support that you are, in fact, on the latest version when you report a bug.
