Hothead Games will be releasing an interactive Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy for iOS devices this fall. Based on Douglas Adams’ fictional device/guidebook of the same name, this new edition of the Hitchhiker’s Guide has been updated “to provide compatibility with such quaint locations as Earth. It will soon be available for all the latest primitive digital devices on your planet,” according to the splash page at www.thenewhitchhikersguide.com
The project was previously announced on this past Towel Day (May 25th), but now has a definite release window. According to the press release, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy app is an authentic experience, allowing fans to feel like they’re holding the device that Douglas Adams described over thirty years ago. Users can learn all about the importance of towels, Vogons, Milliways, the Babel Fish, a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster, how to survive in space, and more, all in this friendly app.”
Staying true to Douglas Adams’ vision was important to the development team, as fans of the series, and most sci-fi fans in general, tend to be sticklers for authenticity. “We really focused on taking existing Guide entries and presenting them in a new, interactive way,” says Joel DeYoung, Hothead Producer. “We have so much respect for the original that we had to stay true to the style of Douglas Adams, and deliver an app that feels familiar to fans, but updated for today’s devices.” Staying authentic also meant working with Megadodo Publications, who are notoriously difficult to get in touch with.
This story got me thinking. Of all the sci-fi gadgets that I’ve always wanted to be real, the Hitchhiker’s Guide ranks right up there with the Tricorder and the Lightsaber in the list of things I had hoped they would make someday.
