A source at Telus is reporting to BoyGeniusReport that Apple’s next generation iPhone, also rumoured to be named the iPhone 5, could hit the streets on October 1, 2011 — in Canada.
The new news puts the phone’s release a month later than many have prognosticated, but we should probably point out that Apple rarely releases iOS devices, and more importantly iPhones, in Canada at the same time they become available in the U.S.
In Canada the first iPhone was the iPhone 3G, which shipped later in Canada than it did in the U.S. The iPhone 3GS shipped at the same time, and then the iPhone 4 was also released later in Canada than south of the border. If we had to guess, Apple’s next iPhone will be slightly delayed in Canada compared to the American market.
Telus is one of eight carriers in Canada that currently carries the iPhone. Rogers, Bell, Fido, Virgin Mobile, SaskTel, MTS, and Koodo also officially carry the device. It’s expected that all will sell the next generation iPhone when it’s officially launched in the coming months.
If the iPhone 5 is going to actually ship in Canada some time in early October, then an announcement would likely come in early September with a U.S. release some time at the end of September. The iPhone 4 was announced on June 7, 2010, and began shipping in the US, as well as the UK, Japan, Germany, and France on June 24th, 2010. The iPhone 4 didn’t arrive in Canada until July 30, 2010, almost a full month later than the original launch countries.
Applying that kind of release schedule to the iPhone 5 could mean that the phone will be announced in late August, and ship sometime in early September in the US, probably just in time for back to school.
