Shipping one new iPhone this year is a prett Captain Obvious thing to claim, but shipping two? That’s something that we’ve never seen before, and it’s also something we haven’t stopped hearing about in the rumor mill for months. For the first time in its history, the iPhone could have two new devices coming to the market.
Today we get the next chapter in the iPhone 5 / iPhone 4S novella. According to 9to5Mac team the iPhone 5 is — wait for it — delayed. Reports have the new iPhone 5 being quite a sight to behold; however, there may be some production delays on one of the assembly lines holding up an announcement.
It appears that the tear-drop shaped iPhone 5 with larger screen and thinner, rounder body is seeing continued design and production delays, at least on one assembly line (Apple has multiple production sources – Pegatron, Foxconn, etc). We therefore think that iPhone 5 will be delayed slightly at the very least and may see shortages all the way into 2012.
There’s currently no schedule for release, and no public announcement plans just yet, but some are expecting that we could see an announcement at the end of September or beginning of October. The 9to5 team seems to think there will still be two iPhones on the market, a slight upgrade to the iPhone 4 (likely spec bumps), and a brand new iPhone 5, and that the release should be still on schedule for October 7th. We agree with them. The iPhone 4 will be sticking around, just like the 3GS stuck around, and the iPhone 3G stuck around previously, but the one difference this time is the iPhone 4 may be getting the 3GS treatment this time around.
I really hope all of these rumors are true. I seriously need a new phone. As sexy as my iPhone 3G was when I purchased it, it’s quickly turning into a dinosaur. I just can’t handle it anymore.
