When the iPad 2 was unveiled, Apple disappointed more than a few people by not saying anything about the next version of its mobile operating system, iOS 5. That may have been because they weren’t ready to, according to an article by MG Siegler over at TechCrunch. Two of their sources have confirmed that iOS 5 is not going to be released until the fall.
Traditionally, the pattern for Apple has been to unveil a new iOS in the spring in order to be ready for a summer launch in conjunction with new iPhone hardware. It looks like this won’t be the case for 2011. If there’s anything I’ve learned watching Apple over the years, it’s that they don’t like to rush things, and would rather wait for something to be done right rather than release something sub par.
Here are some of the other details that TechCrunch was able to obtain:
- iOS may be previewed at WWDC in June, but not released.
- The new iOS launch may coincide with a new iPad (following speculation by John Gruber and others of an iPad 3 in 2011).
- The iOS will be focused heavily around the cloud.
- New cloud services could be part of iOS 5, including a “music locker” service to be launched in the traditional September music event.
- One of the cloud services could be a locating service to find friends and family members.
- OS X Lion will also have many cloud based features built in.
