HTC America’s acting president Martin Fichter claims that the iPhone is no longer cool among the young people of today, because it’s the phone “your Dad uses.” He made these remarks at the Mobile Future Forward Conference on Monday. According to Mashable, Fichter asked his daughter’s dorm mates what phones they used, and was surprised that none of them had an iPhone. The reason?
“None of them has an iPhone, because they told me: ‘My dad has an iPhone.’ There’s an interesting thing that’s going on in the market. The iPhone becomes a little less cool than it was. They were carrying HTCs. They were carrying Samsungs. They were even carrying some Chinese manufacturer’s devices…. Macbook Airs are cool. iPhones are not that cool anymore. We here are using iPhones, but our kids don’t find them that cool anymore.”
Really.
The evidence is anecdotal. One dorm in one college. Hardly stuff to make business plans around. However, it’s true that most teens and twenty somethings don’t want to be like their parents. So whatever the parents like, the kids dislike.
Is this a trend? And do kids really not have iPhones because their Dads use them? Do college kids pay for their own phones, or do their parents foot the bill for cell phones? Maybe the parents are secretly encouraging the kids not to get iPhones because they are kind of expensive and they would rather the kids use something cheaper?
Maybe Dads just want to keep the cool toys for themselves. Not that I would know anything about that, natch.
Or is what’s really happening here is that the spokesperson for HTC America is trying to take the iPhone down a notch, however which way he can? If he has to resort to hinting that the iPhone is no longer cool at his daughter’s dorm, it speaks to how little they have to throw at Apple, patent lawsuits notwithstanding.
