If there was ever a place to be avoided, Wal-mart might just top the list for many. For me, walking through those doors are an anxiety attack waiting to happen. It’s only a matter of time before I see someone yelling at their kids, a crazy person trying to mow people down with their mobile scooter-wheelchair thing, and an employee looking like they’re seconds from going postal on the whole place. And now, to add to the problem, the iPhone 4 is going to be going on sale at Wal-Mart on launch day (in the US).
Wal-mart is now included in a short list of retail stores that will be selling the device on launch day, including AT&T, Radio Shack, and possibly Best Buy. Guess where Wal-mart would be on that list for me. You can either wait in a giant lineup at an Apple store, or get crushed to death in a stampede at Wal-Mart—I’ll take the giant lineup every single time. Not only will the line be a much happier place, but those Apple employees look like they enjoy helping customers a lot more than those Wal-Mart folk.
The move makes sense for Apple — considering Wal-mart’s the worlds largest retailer. Putting the phone in front of as many people as is physically possible is important for the company. The real problem with the concept is that release day has become a bit of an event for earlier adopters, and something tells me not many people are going to be lining up at a Wal-mart unless stockpiles shrink faster than Apple’s anticipating on launch day.
