iOS was just released yesterday, and with it came the new Passbook feature that is basically a digital wallet. It will store digital passes, tickets, membership cards, gift cards, etc. right on the iPhone. MLB Advanced Media has announced that four new Major League Baseball teams are now supporting ticketing using Passbook on iOS 6.
The teams supporting mobile ticketing using Passbook include the San Francisco Giants, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, and Kansas City Royals. These teams will offer digital tickets right away and Passbook ticketing will be used for the rest of the teams’ regular season home dates in 2012.
Passbook allows MLB fans to retrieve and store digital tickets after making a purchase through MLB.com or the official team website. The tickets will also be made available digitally for mobile web purchases. Digital tickets will also be offered on purchases using the MLB.com At Bat or At The Ballpark mobile apps.
The Passbook tickets offered by baseball teams will automatically display the digital ticket from Passbook on the iPhone’s lock screen as a game day reminder. Tickets sold through Passbook will include the customer information, like game date, opponent, time, section, row, and seat.
It certainly looks like more and more services are jumping on the Passbook bandwagon, making digital ticketing more accessible. Over the past few weeks more and more companies have announced Passbook ticketing support, including a number of airlines, Starbucks, the Apple Store, Ticketmaster, and more.
