The Epiphany onE Puck looks just like a hockey puck but with an electric twist. Instead of having to be plugged into the wall to charge, the Epiphany onE Puck will charge your USB devices through the amazing power of temperature. What does that mean? Well, the built-in Stirling Engine will charge your phone from nothing more than the hot or cold drink placed on top of the charger.
The hotter or colder your drink, the more efficiently your device will be charged. It’s designed to generate 5W of power at a combination of 1,000mA and 5Vdc, which is standard for most phone chargers. There is an internal battery that accumulates charge and sends it to your device once it’s connected.
The Epiphany onE Puck is a Kickstarter project that started on February 5. Funding ends on April 6, but the project has already surpassed its funding goal of $100,000 with $124,691 worth of pledges.
At this point you’ll have to pledge at least $115 to get an Epiphany onE Puck, as well as a free t-shirt and windshield sticker. It’s expected to be delivered in about a year.
This looks like a pretty neat device, though it’s probably not the most efficient way to charge your iPhone if you’re in a rush. Visit the Kickstarter page to learn more about it. Just don’t complain to us when you burn your genitals with scalding hot coffee because you needed a faster charge. Mmmkay?
