Earlier today, it was discovered that AT&T may be planning on charging to use the new “FaceTime over cellular” feature in iOS 6. This discovery was obviously no surprise, but it seems that AT&T CEO, Randall Stephenson, has something to say about the “rumor.”
While attending the Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference in Aspen, Stephenson was asked about the “rumor” and cleverly said it’s “too early to talk about pricing.” This is obviously a smart way of avoiding the question. It wouldn’t necessarily be a shocker if AT&T decides to capitalize on a supported feature such as FaceTime over cellular. The company is way too worried about their precious bandwidth.
The one thing that really doesn’t compute in my brain is the need for AT&T to pinch every penny from their customers’ pockets. We can download a 50MB app over-the-air all day long, but we can’t make a 3-5 minute FaceTime call with a low-resolution camera…
I can promise you this isn’t the last we’ll hear of this data scandal. Bravo AT&T.
