You’d think RIM could catch a pity-break at this stage of the game but, no… Apple’s iPhone just had to muscle out the BlackBerry in the enterprise space. Traditionally, enterprise has been the BlackBerry’s strongest bastion, but a study of 2,300 enterprise workers shows that the times are a-changin’.
A report by iPass shows BlackBerry trailing behind the iPhone this time last year (RIM at 34.5 percent and Apple at 32.1 percent), but the iPhone now stands at a healthy 45 percent among enterprise users with BlackBerry having receded to a more modest 32.2 percent. Where Apple is punching RIM in the breadbasket, Android seems to be the one holding RIM’s arms: Android share in enterprise doubled from 11.3 percent to 21.3 percent. Still less than half of Apple’s chunk of the pie, but far from a blip on the map.
.iPass president Evan Kaplan stated, “While increasing iPhone usage in the workplace was inevitable, this is the tipping point when the iPhone has overcome the BlackBerry on its traditional enterprise turf, and business smartphones are in the hands of nearly every knowledge worker.”
RIM has hit some hard times in the last few years. With confused leadership (two CEOs? Wha?) and the PlayBook tablet having disappointed critically and commercially after putting all their eggs in that basket, it’s not encouraging to see the BlackBerry’s go-to market slipping through its fingers. Don’t misunderstand the sentiment, however; RIM could have made any one of a wide range of decisions, but the overpromising and underdelivering (especially with the PlayBook) has left them without much public support or critical good will. But they’ve got nobody to blame but themselves.
