Well, look who’s back. It turns out that the problem wasn’t you — it was Apple. The recent App Store update that caused havoc with devices running iOS 3.1.3 has been resolved, and Apple has fixed whatever the problem was. So if you have an older iPhone or iPod touch stuck on the previous previous version of iOS, you can rest a little easier. You’ve not been put out to pasture just yet.
Apple users on the Apple Support Communities forum have confirmed that they can now download apps from the App Store on their iOS 3.1.3 devices again.
A problem like this does bring attention to the issue of legacy support. How much longer will Apple support older versions of iOS? Is two generations back one too many? Or does Apple simply wait out the natural attrition rate of these devices and hope that people will upgrade? At least in this case, we can rest easy knowing that it’s not a ploy on Apple’s part to persuade people to upgrade their devices, which by most accounts, still work just fine, thank you very much.
