With 130 million iPhone and iPad users who have a Game Center account, Apple’s iOS is the third largest gaming platform on the market, after the Sony PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS with 150 million subscribers. Analysts from Asymco expect Game Center accounts to surpass 200 million by the end of the year, making it the biggest gaming platform.
Before it was acquired, OpenFeint had 180 million iOS accounts in October 2011. If this number was taken into account, then the iOS platform would have already surpassed the cumulative sales figures from the Nintendo DS. OpenFeint apps include Fruit Ninja and Fieldrunners.
According to Asymco though, “At the current growth rate the number of Game Center accounts will surpass 200 million before the year end,” which no gaming device has been able to do yet.
