I may make fun of Rovio’s iOS blockbuster game Angry Birds every time I write about them, but there’s no denying that 500,000,000 downloads makes it one of the biggest iPhone success stories ever. This does not, of course, mean that I will stop telling the world how much it sucks. It merely means that there are a lot of people who will get peeved at me about it when I do.
The massive numbers are a total spread among Rovio’s three Angry Birds titles: Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Rio. The original dropped in 2009 and it’s been pretty much burning up the charts ever since (I knew things were going to a pretty serious place when I saw Jon Hamm talking Angry Birds up to Craig Ferguson on his talk show). Rovio has been pretty good at getting the game out there by making it available on iOS, Android, the Chrome web browser, PC, Mac, and soon, Nokia Asha 300 and 303 S40 feature phones. I’ve often thought that, if they could figure out how, Rovio would install Angry Birds on toasters and egg timers.
In terms of time spent playing the game, a combined total of over approximately 200,000 years of gameplay has been clocked.
