Astronauts nowadays must be bored with their jobs if they have time to film a video for the upcoming Angry Birds Space game. Don Pettit, a real live astronaut aboard NASA’s International Space Station, gives us our very first look at the newest instalment in the Angry Birds franchise set to be released on iOS in less than two weeks.
The new game will include 60 zero gravity levels and six new birds with their own superpower abilities. Rovio has informed us that additional levels with be added in free updates, and as it was with the previous Angry Birds games, available as in-app purchases.
As cheesy as this whole thing might seem, there’s something really important and innovative happening here. Rovio teaming up with NASA could spike a brand new interest in space exploration and has the potential to create the foundation for the next generation of flight engineers and rocket scientists. Dan Weaver, NASA’s associate administrator for communications, had this to say about the collaboration:
Games are fun and entertaining, but they also can be inspirational and informative. This ongoing collaboration with Rovio and Angry Birds is an exciting way to get people engaged with NASA’s missions of exploration and discovery, and get students energized about future careers in science and technology.
Tomorrow at the SXSW conference in Austin, Texas, the world will get its first live, public demonstration of Angry Birds Space. Will it match or exceed the success of the previous games in the franchise? I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Let the speculation begin!
