Back in August of 2011, Square Enix released Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions on iPhone. It was originally a Playstation 1 title, and then it was improved and re-released for the PSP. The iPhone version promised better graphic quality, higher framerates, and faster loading times instead of just a simple PSP port and seemed to deliver on those promises. And at a hefty price point of $16, I’d hope so.
Today, Square Enix released a native iPad version, and it also carries a pretty big price tag. At $18, a lot of iOS gamers will probably find this a tough buy. However, early reviews of the game seem to mostly be positive. Rocco DeMaro of SideMission put it very plainly when he wrote about the game today:
As for pricing… this iPad version will cost you $17.99, which is an awful lot relative to iOS’ other gaming options. Even so, Final Fantasy Tactics is one of those games that, if you consider yourself a serious role-player, you need to experience. Think of it as ‘required playing’ in the same way that The Great Gatsby or Of Mice and Men was required reading in school.
So, if you’re a diehard Final Fantasy fan or just a serious role-player, then it seems like it would be worth the price. For now, I think I’m going to stick with my sub-$10 games.
