When coming home from the grocery store on my bike, one of the most annoying things to do is unlock the door. With my messenger bag full of food and one hand on my bike, it’s pretty rough to grab my keyring from my belt and unlock the door, and then risk dropping my bike when fumbling with putting my key in the lock. Oh yes, this is a Macgasm #firstworldproblems special.
However, what if there was a way to unlock my door wirelessly, using either my iPhone or a wireless keyfob that can be mounted on my keyring or the strap on my messenger bag? Well, with Kwikset’s Kevo, I can do just that.
The Kevo is a Bluetooth-enabeled deadbolt lock that can mount to most doors. The lock interfaces with an app on your Bluetooth 4.0-enabeled iPhone (4S and newer) to unlock your door by simply tapping your finger against the Kevo. When you tap the door, the Kevo looks for an authorized phone and unlocks your door when the connection is made.
You can also send keys to other authorized users for permanent or temporary access to your home. For instance, you can send a temporary key to your cat-sitter if you’ll be on vacation for a week. When these users enter your home, you can have the Kevo app send you a notification.
The folks at Kwikset also built a few important security measures into the Kevo. For example, the Kevo uses multiple layers of encryption to keep unauthorized people out of your home. Additionally, the Kevo uses positioning technology to tell when you’re inside or outside of your house. This keeps other users from unlocking your door from the outside when you’re home, giving you privacy and a piece of mind.
If the four AA batteries that power the lock die before replacement, don’t fret, because you can still use a standard key to unlock the Kevo. Two standard keys are included with the Kevo, as well as one keyfob that can be used to wirelessly unlock your door without a smartphone.
