New York, New York! Kara Swisher is reporting that Apple is planning an event to take place in New York later this month. Her sources say that it doesn’t involve something big and shiny like the next iPad or Apple TV, but it is likely a media-related announcement. If it’s in New York, it makes a lot of sense for it to be related to the publishing industry. iBooks? Newsstand? Something new, maybe.
From Kara Swisher:
That leaves some kind of advertising or even publishing announcement, which might be the case, since Apple SVP of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue is reportedly involved. Cue is in charge of a large swath of Apple’s media units, including the iTunes Store, App Store, iBookstore, as well as iAd and its iCloud services. It’s well known in the ad industry that Apple has been searching for a new head of its mobile advertising unit, since Andy Miller left last summer.
Now, my lovely readers, it is time to do some speculation as to what such an announcement might just entail. What’s left to do in the media space? If its book related, it could involve an OS X iBook client, book rentals, or a new partnership for original content. Maybe they have some new deal with a magazine publisher for no-cost magazine subscriptions with iAds. That’s not particularly likely, but a guy can dream. Heck, maybe its just another partnership like The Daily.
Streaming music à la Spotify is a possibility. Maybe we’ll see purchased iTunes movies show up in iCloud just like your music and TV shows. Whatever it is, Apple always has a lot to live up to at every announcement. As soon as word hits about an event, the hype machine starts, and Apple is expected to deliver every damn time. Whatever they have to announce, I think we can all agree that it will absolutely be more surprising than The Beatles announcement back in 2010. That won’t be difficult.
