The Wall Street journal has uncovered an internal Apple memo from Steve Jobs indicating that he will be taking a medical leave of absence.

At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company.
I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for all of Apple’s day to day operations. I have great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011.
I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy.
In the interim, Tim Cook will be taking over day-to-day operations, as he has in the past. Clearly there are no details on the illness or what’s going on, so we’re going to avoid speculating.
Jobs has previously taken a medical leave of absence on two occasions. The first was to deal with pancreatic cancer in 2004, and more recently in 2009 Jobs underwent a liver transplant.
If we hear anything more that’s based on fact we’ll be sure to update you. Other than that we’ll avoid conjecture and rumors on Jobs’ health issues.
