Good news, eh! Canadians can now stream purchased TV shows to their Apple TVs on demand. Just like their US counterparts, Canadian Apple TV users are no longer restricted to just episode rentals on the device itself. While this is a step in the right direction, it does showcase the ugliness of international content distribution.
Too often, Apple (and pretty much every other company) will make an announcement of a new and shiny feature, and it ends up being US-only. If we’re lucky, it’s only a matter of time before other countries get it. Sometimes, it just doesn’t happen at all. The crazy part is how often Canada gets the shaft. The US and Canada are tremendous trade partners. The laws of both countries are incredibly similar thanks to the common ancestor of their governments. Wasn’t NAFTA supposed to make this easier?
I feel bad for the fellow Apple nerds that happen to live in the Great White North, but let’s take comfort in this good news. If this update blows your skirt up, Apple TVs can always be purchased from your friendly Canadian Amazon and Canadian Apple stores.
