Today Apple its giving 42 new countries the ability to buy and rent movies through the iTunes store, slightly less than the 56 new iTunes Stores that opened on December 4. Film selection and availability is somewhat limited and is different in each region.
Though movie purchasing and renting is available in these countries, like South Africa, a lot of the stores are only showing films from Disney, Sony, and their subsidiaries, and not all countries allow movie rentals or high-definition content.
When Apple rolled out the iTunes Store to 56 new countries on December 4, it included content from both local and international artists. At the time, only Russia, Turkey, India, and Indonesia supported movie and video purchases. Apple didn’t give a timeline for future releases.
Earlier this morning, the following countries now have access to movies:
In Europe: Belarus, Moldova, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine
In Africa, the Middle East and India: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Botswana, Cape Verde, Egypt, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, India, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Swaziland, United Arab Emirates, Uganda and Zimbabwe
In Asia Pacific: Indonesia, Micronesia, Mongolia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan
In Latin America and the Caribbean: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Belize, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago
