Last night Apple was awarded an Emmy at the 64th annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards at CES. The event took place at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.
The Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards first began in 1948 to honor “development and innovation in broadcast technology and recognize companies, organizations and individuals for breakthroughs in technology that have a significant effect on television engineering.”
Apple was awarded the Emmy for its “Eco-system for Real Time Presentation of TV Content to Mobile Devices without the use of Specialized Television Hardware.” Although not entirely clear which Apple service this refers to, it’s thought to relate to Apple’s iCloud and iTunes services as they allow users to access television content from a computer or Apple device. Kinda seems like a stretch though, doesn’t it?
Each year the awards are determined by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS). Awards are given to “an individual, company, or to a scientific or technical organization for developments and/or standardization involved in engineering technologies which either represent an extensive improvement on existing methods or are so innovative in nature that they materially have affected the transmission, recording, or reception of television.”
Apple has won other Emmys in the past, including an award for its Final Cut Pro application, the development of FireWire, and its famous “Think Different” advertising campaign.
Other companies to receive Emmys included Sony, Motorola, Canon, Time Warner Cable, Warners Brothers, and more.
