Apple Warns The Masses To Stop Using Retina MacBook Pro Palm Rests

A number of companies make them, but Apple is warning people that putting a palm cover on the MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) could eventually result in damage to the display.

In a note published on its support blog, Apple warns:

To enable thin design, the clearance between the display and the palm rest area is engineered to tight tolerances. Do not use palm rest covers as the added thickness may interfere with the designed resting position of the display … As a best practice, keep the palm rest clear of any material.

Just last week someone asked me about buying one of these palm rests. I completely recommended it. I had one on my last MacBook Pro, and loved it. It never once crossed my mind that it could damage my display. Clearly Apple’s having some problems with broken displays if they saw the need to warn customers. At this stage, we’d recommend you exercise caution when it comes to pimping out your MacBook with these palm rest covers. The last thing you want is to damage your display.
