There is a rumor swirling about that Apple may announce their Back to School specials at this year’s World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC). WWDC is slated to run from June 6th through June 10th at Moscone West in San Francisco.
As far as my research shows, Apple has been doing their Back to School promotions since 2003, at least according to an article on iLounge from May 30th, 2003. So this announcement would not be unexpected since it now the end of the school year, and immediately following that is the “Back to School” season. This year is no different.
BGR is reporting that Apple will be announcing their Back to School promotion at WWDC. Much like last year’s offering of a free iPod touch or $229 towards the purchase of any iPod, with the purchase of a new Mac, this year should be no different. In addition to the iPod offering, there is a rumor that a student may get $200 off the purchase price of an iPad as an additional option, again with a qualifying Mac purchase.
The addition of the iPad would be a great catalyst for getting more iPads in the hands of students. The only potential issue is that Apple still has a 1-2 week lead time to get an iPad. So, this could put a damper on anybody wanting to purchase a Mac in the store and also walk out with a specific iPad model.
It seems a bit odd that Apple would make this announcement at WWDC given that the target audience of WWDC is developers. Although, since Apple hasĀ invited journalists to the Keynote, that may be a good time to make the announcement. I guess we will see what the Keynote on June 6th has in store for us.
