Since being released with iOS 6, Apple’s Maps app has been met with a lot of criticism, but Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is trying to put it all in perspective. Speaking at an event in Sydney for Fusion-io, where he is chief scientist, Wozniak admitted he was a little disappointed with Apple Maps, but also said the problems are not as severe as critics are making them out to be.
Having replaced Google Maps with iOS 6, Apple’s Maps app has been criticized for being full of errors, including giving inaccurate location information. It’s been rumored that Apple is getting a team together to fix these types of problems.
Wozniak got his iPhone 5 last week after waiting in line at an Apple Store in Brisbane, Australia. Speaking to ZDNET, he said he was loving the iPhone 5 but was little disappointed with Apple Maps. He said:
I tried to navigate somewhere, and I couldn’t get to where I wanted to by voice. So, I was a little disappointed, because I love navigation by voice with my Google [Android] phones, actually, since they always get it and are based on a better database.
Wozniak also said he’s read a lot about the criticism that Apple’s Maps app has been met with, but thinks it has been blown a little out of proportion. He said, “I have been reading about the problems, and I don’t know if they are that severe.”
He used the example of the antenna problem found in the iPhone 4 that would cause some people to lose calls when the antenna was touched. Wozniak said he never really noticed this problem.
Sometimes, there are a lot of complaints about one little thing people spot, but it’s not that hard to deal with in life. I don’t know yet about Maps – I’m a little worried about the navigation, but I’ve still got it covered with a bunch of other navigation apps.
