It looks like Google is hoping to create its own iPhoto competitor. Google has just purchased Snapseed from Nik Software for an undisclosed amount.

We’ve always aspired to share our passion for photography with everyone, and with Google’s support we hope to be able to help many millions more people create awesome pictures.
I’ve gone on record suggesting that Apple purchase Snapseed and replace iPhoto for iOS with the application. Looks like Google beat them to the punch. Smart move by Google. Now they have an amazing photo editor that can be placed on Android devices, as well as compete with Apple’s offerings on iOS and OS X. Apple even deemed Snapseed “App Of The Year.” I can’t state enough how smart this move is for Google. Buying up trusted and amazing iOS apps and then moving them to Android is a great way to build a bridge to their handset platform for customers. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is just the beginning for Google.
