Earlier this month it was reported that Sharp was planning to begin shipping screens for the iPhone 5 this month, but according to new reports by theĀ Wall Street Journal, Sharp hasn’t started mass-producing screens for Apple’s next iPhone.
Production has been delayed due, in part, to manufacturing difficulties. At this point, it’s unclear when Sharp will start shipping the panels.
Sharp, which is one of Applel’s major suppliers of liquid crystal displays, was planning to begin shipping the screens by the end of August, which makes you wonder if Apple will have enough components to meet the demand for the upcoming iPhone release.
Sharp is just one of three suppliers of LCD panels for the next iPhone. Japan Display and LG Display, the other two suppliers, have reportedly already begun shipping their screens to Apple.
September 12 is widely believed to be the day of Apple’s big event to announce new lines of devices and it’s unclear if Sharp’s delay will cause supply problems for Apple once the new iPhone is officially released. Carolyn Wu, a Beijing-based spokeswoman for Apple, declined to comment on the situation.
Sharp also delayed shipments for iPad screens earlier this year, but there were no apparent supply shortages when it launched. If this is any indication for the iPhone, then consumers have nothing to worry about.
