Samsung is bringing in the big guns. According to a report in The Korea Times, Samsung now has the support of Google in its legal battles against Apple. This is the first time that the Korean company has confirmed receiving assistance from Google in its legal dispute with Apple.
In recent news, a U.S. court recently ordered a sales ban on Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus smartphones, which were designed in partnership with Google. Since this ruling, Samsung and Google have been working closely together to create a united front against Apple, says the report.
Google is also supporting HTC, a Taiwanese smartphone maker and a major Android player, which is also in a legal dispute with Apple.
Legal disputes between Samsung and Apple began early last year, when Apple filed a lawsuit accusing Samsung of copying the look and feel of iPhones and iPads when it introduced its Galaxy smartphones and touchscreen tablets.
Samsung counterattacked saying that Apple has been infringing on a number of its wireless patents. Since then lawsuits against the two companies have been spread all over world. The next court date for Apple and Samsung in the U.S. is scheduled for July 30.
The report states that the recent sales ban against Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 will cost Samsung about $80 million. The sales ban went into effect last week after Apple posted a $2.6 million bond to keep the phone out of the U.S..
Apple also won another injunction in the U.S. last week against Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus smartphone, the handset developed in collaboration with Google. The losses on the Galaxy Nexus could be even higher than the tablet, costing $120 million if the sales ban lasts for two months.
