While you went out and bought your morning coffee, Apple went and bought another company. New reports confirm that Apple has acquired the Swedish startup “AlgoTrim”, a company which, amongst other things, focuses on drastically compressing the data used on mobile phones.
Like most Apple acquisitions, details on the purchase are slim, with no news of how much was paid or for what purpose. The company is most known for its data compression tools, including software designed to improve JPEG processing by up to 600%. Technology like this can be used to help decrease users’ bandwidth consumption as well as improve storage space on devices.
Apple and AlgoTrim refused to comment at this time, likely due to a contractual agreement. Hopefully we get to see the fruits of this acquisition sometime in the near future.
